The works involved an extension to the existing library to provide additional library space, seminar rooms and a 24 hour IT suite on the ground floor.

The new flagship building provides vibrant new spaces for learning and creates a new frontage, plaza and entrance atrium welcoming students to the new facilities.

State of the Art design and use of materials dictated innovative forms of construction and structural solutions (brick diaphragm walls, innovative frame design to cope with large slot windows, hanging external wall columns, ‘beamless’ floor design, fine unfinished concrete surfaces, sedum roofs, innovative sun-shading solutions).

This low energy, naturally cross-ventilated building with ground source cooling, heat recovery systems, rainwater harvesting and innovative forms of acoustic attenuation and lighting design achieved a BREEAM rating of “Excellent”.

The project demonstrates the careful balance between innovation, sustainable design, user requirements, construction materials and budget.

The project was recently awarded a ‘Commendation’ at the Civic Trust Awards.
