LAMDA - Phase 2 - Halfway Point

BAQUS is pleased to announce that we have reached the halfway point of Phase 2 of the construction of a new teaching and theatre complex for LAMDA (the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art).  We are currently at week 39 of the 78 week programme, due to finish in late summer 2016.

BAQUS are working for LAMDA  as Employer’s Agent, CDM Consultant and Quantity Surveyors on the project, which has a current construction value of £18m.

Designed by Niall McLaughlin Architects, the new facility comprises a 200+ seat theatre (the Simon Sainsbury Theatre) with a full height fly tower, a 120 seat studio theatre (The Carne Theatre), 10 flexible rehearsal/teaching studios, a dedicated recorded media suite, the Sackler Library & Study Centre,  state of the art technical and backstage facilities, student changing rooms, offices and meeting rooms.

The project is challenging as the site is situated between the A4 (one of the busiest roads in Europe) on one side and the Piccadilly and District lines serving Barons Court tube station on the other side. The overall building covers 98% of the available site ground area and the main contractor, VolkerFitzpatrick, is managing the construction logistics and access by utilising two very large tower cranes, unusual for such a small site.

LAMDA is one of the world’s leading drama schools, with famous graduates including Benedict Cumberbatch, Jim Broadbent, Patricia Hodge, David Oyelowo, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Ruth Wilson, Rory Kinnear, Maureen Lipman, Janet Suzman and David Suchet.   The new development will enable LAMDA to house all its facilities on one site for the first time in its 155-year history.
